Cassie Turner, her brown hair pulled into a practical ponytail, arrives with her trademark oversized sunglasses and notepad, scanning the scene for clues. The scent of saltwater mixes with the distant aroma of coconut sunscreen, while seabirds circle overhead. She kneels by a set of strange footprints leading from the water to a pile of soggy towels.
"Alright, folks, can anyone tell me when the dolphin was last seen?"
A nervous zookeeper shuffles closer, wringing his hat.
Eddie Morales, assistant dolphin trainer, stammers, "She was here during feeding at dawn, but then... she just vanished, Cassie!"
She spots a shimmering scale wedged between planks and snags a discarded fish bucket with a mysterious logo. Sunlight flashes off the metal as Cassie inspects it, her brow furrowing in concentration.
"Odd. This isn’t from the zoo, and our dolphin doesn’t shed scales," she muses aloud. Eddie peers over her shoulder, almost tripping over his own feet.
"Maybe it’s from that rival aquarium up the coast—what if they’re trying to sabotage us?"
The air is cool and humid. Cassie clutches a mop, trying to blend in, while Eddie attempts to look nonchalant but nearly knocks over a bucket. They pass by a tank housing a cranky-looking octopus who seems to glare knowingly.
"Remember, if anyone asks, we’re here to clean the penguin exhibit," Cassie whispers, eyes darting for signs of their missing dolphin.
"Right. Penguins. Got it. But what does a dolphin want with penguins?"
Cassie and Eddie give chase, dodging stacks of fish crates and slipping on puddles. The figure tosses a fish at them before ducking through a side door. Laughter echoes down the hall.
"Who throws fish at people?!" Cassie yelps, narrowly missing a mackerel to the face. Eddie is doubled over, trying not to laugh.
"Maybe it’s a new kind of warning!"
Marina Blue, former dolphin trainer turned activist, smiles slyly as Cassie and Eddie appear, breathless and bewildered.
"Looking for a dolphin? You’re not the only ones. But you’ll never find her without a little help from the locals," she says, tossing a sardine to the bird.
"Locals? You mean... the animals?"
Cassie scribbles notes while Eddie tries, unsuccessfully, to mimic seal sounds. Marina offers translations, grinning.
"They say our dolphin friend was taken by boat—see that buoy? That’s where the trail ends,"
"Then that’s where we’re headed. Eddie, can you swim?"
"Only if chased by something scarier than a missing dolphin,"
Cassie rows with determination, hair wild in the wind. Eddie bails water with an old boot, while Marina scans the horizon with binoculars. The buoy draws closer, barnacles clinging to its rusted surface.
"If we survive this, I’m never skipping arm day again," Cassie jokes, sweat running down her brow.
Cassie signals to Marina, who dives silently into the water. Eddie distracts the kidnappers with a barrage of fish puns.
"Hey, did you hear about the fish who became an actor? He was the star of his own show—Gillmore Girls!"
While the villains groan, Cassie leaps aboard, unties the dolphin, and with Marina’s help, pushes her back into the sea.
Cassie hugs Eddie, both soaked and grinning. Marina waves from the waves alongside the dolphin, giving a thumbs-up.
"Next time, can we have a case that doesn’t involve swimming, fish, or boats?"
"I’ll settle for a missing goldfish. Or maybe a lost hamster,"
"Well, looks like the adventure’s not over yet," Cassie says, eyes twinkling as the sun rises beyond her window.
