Rose and Dalia sat by the window, their eyes wide with anticipation as the airplane soared through the sky, heading towards their summer destination.
"Do you think we'll see dolphins?" Dalia asked, clutching her stuffed seahorse, Sparkles, with excitement.
"I hope so," Rose replied, her mind already drifting to the stories she would draw inspired by the Egyptian landscape.
Their father leaned in with a smile. "We're off to Egypt, the land of ancient wonders. Marsalam is known for its beautiful sea life and coral reefs," he said.
Their mother added, "And don't forget the rich culture and kind people. It's a place where the past and present blend beautifully."
The sisters shared a conspiratorial look, feeling the adventure bubbling within them.
The marketplace in Marsalam was a feast for the senses. Rose and Dalia wandered through stalls brimming with vibrant fabrics, aromatic spices, and intricate crafts.
An old woman with a colorful scarf beckoned them over. She had eyes that sparkled with secrets and handed Rose a pen with swirling silver designs. "It holds a bit of magic," she whispered with a knowing wink.
Rose felt the pen warm in her hand, her imagination racing with possibilities. "What if it's really magic?" Dalia asked, eyes wide with wonder.
"Maybe it can draw things to life," Rose mused as they continued exploring, the pen a mysterious promise of what lay ahead.
The next day, Rose and Dalia were building sandcastles on the beach when a friendly voice greeted them.
Umi, a boy with a bright smile and a bracelet of woven thread and seashells, introduced himself. "My father is the diving instructor, and he tells me stories of magic hidden in the sands and sea," he said.
"Magic? Like the stories we read?" Dalia asked eagerly.
"Even better! Follow me," Umi urged, leading them to a quiet spot under a palm tree where he shared his grandfather's book filled with sketches of pyramids and hieroglyphs.
Rose pulled out the magical pen. "Do you think it's connected?" she wondered aloud, excitement tingling in her fingers.
As Rose sketched a pyramid from the book, a warm breeze swirled around them, and the sand beneath their feet shimmered. Suddenly, they found themselves in a vast desert with a pyramid towering before them.
"It's the pen! It really is magic," Dalia exclaimed, clutching Rose's arm as they gazed at the ancient structure.
"Let's explore," Umi suggested, his eyes filled with excitement and curiosity.
The children entered the pyramid, their hearts pounding with the thrill of discovery.
Inside the pyramid, the air was cool and the walls were adorned with paintings of gods and goddesses. They encountered Princess Merit, a young girl in a flowing white dress with a golden scarab necklace.
"I am Princess Merit, and the spirits here are restless. Will you help me free them?" she asked, her voice both gentle and commanding.
"Of course," Dalia replied eagerly, and the group embarked on a quest filled with riddles and guardians to reach the heart of the pyramid.
In the final chamber, they found a chest containing a large pearl and a golden key engraved with symbols matching those in Umi's book.
"These must be important," Umi said, examining the key.
"Take them as a gift, but use them wisely," Princess Merit said with a smile, her spirit at peace.
Rose drew a picture of the beach, and a warm light enveloped them, transporting them back to the familiar sands of Marsalam.
Back on the beach, their parents waved from the water. "Did you have fun?" they called.
Rose and Dalia exchanged a knowing smile. "Oh, you have no idea," Dalia whispered, the pearl and key safely tucked away, a reminder of their unforgettable adventure.
