Mackenzie awoke with a start, the chill of the snow beneath her a stark contrast to the warmth of her sleeping bag from the night before. She sat up, rubbing her eyes, trying to make sense of the unfamiliar surroundings. "Where am I?" she murmured, her breath visible in the cold air.
Determined to find her way back, Mackenzie began to walk, leaving a trail of footprints in the pristine snow. Her mind raced with thoughts of Ashley and Sienna, wishing they were with her. "I can't be the only one here," she whispered, her voice swallowed by the vastness of the forest.
Mackenzie sat close to the fire, her hands stretched out to absorb its warmth. Suddenly, the crunch of snow alerted her, and she turned to see a fox emerging from the shadows. Its eyes were intelligent and kind, and it approached cautiously. "Hello there," Mackenzie said softly, offering a piece of her granola bar. The fox sniffed before accepting the treat, sitting beside her as if to offer companionship.
Mackenzie learned to gather berries and melt snow for water, the fox always by her side, guiding her to safe spots. "Thank you," she often said, feeling the comfort of its presence. At night, she would talk to it as if it were an old friend, "I hope I find a way back home soon."
Mackenzie stood in awe, her heart pounding with a mix of fear and excitement. The fox nudged her leg gently as if urging her to go. "Is this it?" she asked, her voice trembling. Taking a deep breath, she stepped forward, feeling a strange pull towards the portal. "Goodbye, my friend," she whispered, tears in her eyes as she looked back at the fox.
Ashley and Sienna rushed towards Mackenzie, their faces alight with relief. "Where have you been?" Ashley exclaimed, throwing her arms around her. "We were so worried!" Sienna added, tears in her eyes. "It's a long story," Mackenzie replied, smiling as she embraced them, grateful to be home once more.
