Eli looked around, his eyes wide with both fear and curiosity. "Do you think we're lost, Lila?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper. Lila, older and more composed, squeezed his hand reassuringly. "We just need to keep moving. We'll find the way out," she replied, scanning the towering trees for any familiar landmarks.
Lila paused, her eyes catching the faint glimmer of water. "Look, Eli, a stream! If we follow it, it might lead us out," she exclaimed with newfound determination. Eli nodded, feeling a spark of hope. Together, they followed the stream, the gentle sound of flowing water guiding them through the shadows.
Eli clutched Lila's arm tightly, his heart pounding in his chest. "What was that?" he whispered fearfully. Lila, trying to remain calm, whispered back, "It's okay, just stay close to me. We'll be alright," as they hurried along the path, eyes wide and alert.
Eli and Lila emerged from the trees, blinking in the bright morning light. "We made it, Lila! We're out!" Eli shouted with joy, his face breaking into a wide grin. Lila laughed, relief washing over her as she took in the beautiful landscape before them.
Lila grabbed Eli's hand, and they ran towards the cottage, their hearts light with the promise of safety and comfort. "It's Uncle Jack! We're finally home!" she exclaimed, tears of joy in her eyes. Eli beamed, feeling the warmth of home welcoming them back.
Eli looked at Lila, his eyes shining with gratitude. "Thanks for keeping me safe, Lila," he said softly. Lila smiled, hugging him tightly. "We'll always have each other's backs, no matter what," she replied, knowing that their bond was stronger than any fear the woods could conjure.
