Kai stared at the empty spot where Miso usually napped, his brown eyes wide with worry behind his glasses. Eli, his younger brother with messy blonde hair and vibrant blue eyes, paced anxiously near the door.
"Kai, Miso's not in the backyard or the garage. What if she got lost in the woods?"
"We'll find her, Eli. I've got her favorite treats and the flashlight. We just have to stick together—no matter what."
Eli's eyes widen as he clutches his backpack straps, following Kai deeper into the woods. The cool shade makes the world seem quieter, every sound amplified by their nervousness.
"Did you hear that? That was Miso, I know it!"
"Stay close. The sound came from the old hollow tree by the creek. Let's hurry before it gets dark."
Kai tests the first branch, wobbling as he steps across. Eli hesitates, eyeing the swift current below.
"You can do it, Eli. Just look at me and don't let go of my hand."
"I... okay. For Miso!" He grips Kai's hand tightly as they inch across together.
Eli drops to his knees, calling softly. Kai carefully pushes aside the branches, ignoring the scratches on his arms.
"Miso, it's us! We're here to bring you home,"
"I've got her treats, Miso. Come on, girl, you’re safe now."
Eli[/@ch_2]'s leg, purring weakly. The brothers wrap her gently in a towel, both relieved and overjoyed.]
"I was so scared we'd never see her again," tears glimmering in his eyes.
"We promised we'd always look out for each other—Miso too. Let's get her home."
Eli[/@ch_2]'s arms. Warm golden light spills from the windows, and their parents greet them with hugs on the porch. The scent of dinner drifts into the night, promising comfort and safety.]
Kai and Eli share a tired, triumphant smile as they settle Miso back onto her favorite pillow. The house feels fuller, their family whole again.
"Next time, let's teach Miso to come when we call," laughter bubbling up between them.
"As long as we're together, we can handle any adventure."
