Max sat cross-legged on his bed, the soft hum of the city outside a comforting lullaby. The newfound app on his phone blinked curiously, its icon a simple hourglass. "A time travel app? This can't be real," he murmured to himself, a mix of skepticism and intrigue in his voice. The rain intensified, drumming a steady rhythm as he hesitated for a moment before tapping the icon. The room seemed to shiver slightly, as if responding to his touch.
Max found himself standing amidst a throng of people, each absorbed in their own world. The sun blazed overhead, casting long shadows on the pavement. Cars rolled by, their radios blaring tunes from a bygone era. Max adjusted his cap, his heart pounding with excitement and a hint of fear. He spotted Jake, his uncle, younger and full of life, striding purposefully towards a bank. "Uncle Jake!" he called out, weaving through the crowd to catch up.
Max reached his uncle just in time, breathless but determined. "Uncle Jake, wait! That investment... it’s not a good idea," he blurted, urgency in his tone. Jake turned, surprise etched on his face. "Max? How did you...?" But Max shook his head, unwilling to explain the impossible. Instead, he focused on convincing him. "Trust me, please. It will only lead to trouble," he pleaded.
Max sat on his bed, the phone resting innocently beside him. Relief washed over him as he recalled the moment his uncle decided to heed his warning. The future, at least for now, was safe. But as he pondered the events, a new worry crept in. Liam, his classmate, had been asking too many questions lately. "I have to be careful," he whispered to himself, determination hardening his resolve.
Liam approached Max during recess, his curiosity barely concealed. "You've been acting strange, Max. What’s going on?" he probed, a sly smile playing on his lips. Max shrugged, feigning nonchalance. "Just the usual stuff. Homework, video games... you know," he replied, his voice steady despite the tension simmering beneath the surface. Liam studied him for a moment, suspicion lingering in his gaze, but Max maintained his calm facade.
Max found solace among the stacks, where he could think without interruption. He understood now that the app was both a gift and a burden. Protecting its secret was paramount, not just for him, but for his family's future. As he flipped through a history book, a smile tugged at his lips. The past had been altered, but the challenges of the present remained. "I guess some things never change," he mused, ready to face whatever came next with the wisdom and courage he had gained.
