Elijah adjusted his backpack, his fingers gripping the old flashlight tightly. Beside him, Cici unfolded a napkin, her eyes scanning the scribbled map. "We have to make it across town before it gets too dark," he insisted, glancing nervously at the long shadows stretching across the pavement.
"I know," Cici replied, her voice both determined and tinged with a hint of fear. "We'll follow this path through the park. It's the quickest way."
As they approached the park, Elijah froze. A hulking silhouette moved among the trees, its massive tail sweeping the ground with ominous force. Cici grabbed his arm, pulling him behind a bench.
"That's a triceratops," he whispered, his voice barely audible. Cici nodded, her eyes wide.
"We need to stay low and quiet," she breathed, her heart pounding in her chest.
Elijah pointed toward the alley, his eyes alight with hope. "This might lead us closer to the library," he suggested.
"Let's take it," Cici agreed, peering into the dimly lit path. As they navigated the narrow passage, the distant growl of a dinosaur echoed, urging them onward.
Mr. Thompson was a tall, bespectacled man, known for his love of paleontology. "Elijah, Cici!" he called, relief evident in his voice. "We've been gathering everyone we can. We need to stick together."
"We're trying to get to the library," Elijah explained. Cici nodded in agreement, feeling a renewed sense of determination.
Mr. Thompson led the way, his voice steady and reassuring. "Once we're inside, we'll be safe until morning," he promised.
"We're almost there," Cici whispered to Elijah, her grip tightening on his hand as they hurried toward the library's welcoming doors.
Elijah and Cici settled into chairs, exhaustion finally catching up with them. "We did it," Elijah murmured, a smile tugging at his lips.
"Yeah, we did," Cici replied, her eyes bright with triumph. Together, they watched as the others settled in, grateful for the safety they had found.
