Lila, a bright-eyed girl with tangled hair, stretches and glances at the calendar pinned to her wall. Today is circled in red hearts. Her puppy, Milo, a fluffy golden bundle, yawns and paws at her hand.
"Milo, it's Mama's birthday! We have to make her something special," Lila whispers, excitement bubbling in her voice.
"Woof!" Milo barks softly, his tail thumping against the comforter.
Lila tiptoes in, Milo trotting behind her, his nose twitching with curiosity. She surveys the supplies, her eyes bright with inspiration.
"Maybe we can bake Mama a cake and make her a pretty card," she muses, opening a recipe book with flour-smudged fingers.
"Ruff ruff!" Milo adds, watching as she gathers apples and eggs.

Egg shells crunch under careful fingers as Lila cracks them into a bowl, her tongue poking out in concentration. Milo sneezes when flour dusts his nose, making Lila giggle.
"Oh, Milo, you're such a mess! We have to be careful or Mama's cake will have more puppy hair than sugar," she laughs, brushing flour from his fur.
"Wooooof!" Milo protests, nuzzling her ankle.

Lila hums as she draws, glancing at Milo who sits beside her, his head tilted, watching every stroke. She carefully writes, "Happy Birthday, Mama. We love you so much!" in big, wobbly letters.
"What do you think, Milo? Will Mama like it?" she asks, holding up the card.
"Arf!" Milo barks, wagging his tail as if to say yes.

Mom, a gentle woman with warm eyes, sits reading on the sofa. She looks up in surprise as her daughter and puppy approach.
"Happy Birthday, Mama! We made you a cake and a card," Lila announces, her cheeks flushed with pride.
"Woof woof!" Milo adds, presenting himself grandly.
Mom hugs Lila tightly, her eyes shining with happy tears. Milo bounces around their feet, catching crumbs and joining in the celebration.
"Thank you, sweethearts. This is the best birthday ever," Mom says, her voice warm with love.
"We love you so much, Mama," Lila replies, her heart full as the morning sun streams in, wrapping them all in golden light.
