Sophie sat cross-legged on the grass, a book clutched in her hands. Her eyes darted nervously over the words, struggling to weave them into meaning. Her faithful companion, Lacy, a golden retriever with eyes as warm as honey, lay beside her, watching intently.
Sophie sighed, lowering the book. "I wish I could read like the other kids," she confided to Lacy. The dog wagged her tail vigorously, nudging Sophie's hand with her nose. Sophie giggled, her spirit lifting slightly. "Alright, alright. Let's try again," she said, opening the book once more.
Sophie stumbled over a sentence, but Lacy's patient gaze encouraged her to keep going. "The... the dog r-ran," she read slowly, pausing for breath. Lacy barked softly, as if in agreement, and Sophie beamed with a newfound confidence.
Sophie turned a page and suddenly found herself reading more fluently. "The boy found a treasure," she read aloud, her voice gaining strength. Lacy barked excitedly, and Sophie laughed with joy. "I did it!" she exclaimed, wrapping her arms around Lacy's neck.
Sophie ran into the house, her heart light with excitement. "Mom! Dad! I can read!" she shouted, her voice echoing through the rooms. Lacy followed closely, her tail wagging furiously, as if sharing in Sophie's triumph.
Sophie smiled, looking at Lacy. "Thank you, Lacy. You were the best teacher," she whispered, hugging her furry friend. As they sat there, surrounded by the beauty of their garden, Sophie knew that with Lacy by her side, she could conquer any challenge.
