Johnny bounded down the stairs with a grin, his heart brimming with excitement. Grandma Ruby, with her gentle smile, greeted him at the breakfast table. However, a slight frown creased her brow as she tried to recall the day's plans.
"Did we plan something fun today?" Ruby asked, her eyes searching Johnny's face for answers.
"Remember, Grandma? We're going to Central Park!" Johnny replied, trying to keep his voice cheerful, even as a pang of sadness tugged at his heart.
"Why does Grandma forget, Max?" whispered Johnny, his hand gently stroking Max's fur.
Max rested his head on Johnny's lap, his eyes understanding, as if to say, "Sometimes, memories fly away like birds, and even the best nest needs a bit of help to hold them."
"Let's play, Grandma!" Johnny's face lit up with excitement, his eyes sparkling with the thrill of rediscovery.
Ruby laughed, a twinkle in her eye. "Oh, I remember playing this with you!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with warmth.
Each card placed brought a shared memory, a piece of their history reclaimed. Even the smallest victories, like finding the right card, became grand celebrations, their laughter echoing like music in the room.
"Even if you forget sometimes, Grandma, I'll remember for the both of us," Johnny promised, feeling hope bloom within him.
Ruby kissed his forehead. "And I will always love you, Johnny, no matter what happens!"
"Grandma may sometimes forget, but I’ll make sure our love story is always remembered," Johnny whispered, closing his eyes with a contented sigh as he drifted into a peaceful sleep.
