Josh leans over the table, a grin on his face as he nudges Leo's arm. "Dude, is that all you're eating? My little sister eats more than that." Next to him, Mark, another boy in grunge attire, snickers, flipping through a comic book. Leo shrugs, trying to appear unfazed. "Forgot my lunch bag. It's fine," he mutters, cheeks tinged with embarrassment as his friends laugh a little louder.
Mom strides confidently toward Leo, her voice bright and loving, carrying effortlessly across the cafeteria. "Oh, there’s my sweet boy!" Every head seems to swivel; the hum of the room dips as attention lands on their table. Leo freezes, mortification flickering in his eyes while Josh and Mark struggle to stifle giggles.
"Leo, honey, you left your lunch on the counter again! I packed your favorite sandwich and even put in that pudding cup you like. You need your fuel to grow big and strong!" Leo glances around, desperate for this to end, whispering harshly, "Mom, thanks, you can go now. Please." Undeterred, Mom leans in, cups her son’s face, and plants a loud, affectionate kiss on his cheek. The sound echoes—MWAH!—drawing laughter and snickers from nearby tables.
"Mom! Why? Why’d you have to do that? In front of everyone? You kissed my cheek!" Mom's features soften, her voice gentle and full of conviction. "Leo, I know it’s embarrassing right now. But I am loving you exactly how I pray your wife will love you someday." The noisy cafeteria seems to pause as Leo processes her words, the embarrassment in his posture slowly easing.
"I pray she’ll take care of you, even with the small things. That she'll never be ashamed to show you she loves you. You are a treasure from God, my son, and you should always be treated like one." Leo meets his mom’s gaze, the flush fading from his cheeks. He glances back at Josh, who gives him a small, respectful nod—no longer teasing, but understanding.
