Tommy, a curious little boy with tousled hair and bright eyes, wandered away from the playground. As he kicked a pebble along the path, a soft whimper caught his attention. In the shadows, he spotted a skinny, scruffy dog with matted fur, its eyes pleading and fearful.
Tommy approached slowly, his heart swelling with empathy. "Hey there, you're all alone, huh?" he whispered, crouching a few feet away. The dog edged closer, its nose twitching as it caught Tommy's scent. "It's okay, I won't hurt you," Tommy assured, extending a hand in a gesture of friendship.
The dog nudged Tommy's hand with its wet nose, and a tentative smile appeared on Tommy's face. "See, we're friends now," he said softly. He rummaged through his backpack and found a half-eaten sandwich. "You must be hungry," he added, offering it to the dog, who devoured it gratefully.
Tommy thought about the dog's fate, alone and cold in the park. "I can't leave you here," he murmured, his mind made up. He knew his parents might not be thrilled, but he couldn't bear the thought of leaving the dog behind. "Come on, let's go home," he decided, patting his knee as an invitation.
Tommy's parents looked up in surprise as he entered with the dog at his side. "Mom, Dad, this is Buddy," Tommy announced, the name coming instinctively. His mother exchanged a look with his father, their initial hesitation softening as they saw the joy in Tommy's eyes.
"Welcome to the family, Buddy," his mother said with a smile, reaching down to pet the dog. "Looks like we have a new member," his father added, ruffling Tommy's hair. The dog curled up contentedly at their feet, and Tommy knew this was the beginning of a wonderful friendship.
