Daisy, a timid six-year-old, clung to her mother’s hand as they approached the school gates. Her heart pounded in her chest, each step feeling heavier than the last. "Do I really have to go, Mom?" she whispered, her voice barely audible over the distant chatter of children.
Mrs. Collins, Daisy's mother, knelt down beside her daughter, her eyes warm and reassuring. "You'll be fine, sweetheart. Just remember to smile and be yourself. You'll make friends in no time." She smoothed Daisy’s hair and gave her a gentle hug.
Mr. Thompson, the first-grade teacher, stood at his classroom door greeting each student with a welcoming smile. His kind eyes twinkled behind round glasses, and his voice was calm and soothing. "Good morning, Daisy! Welcome to our class," he said, kneeling to her level.
Daisy hesitated for a moment, then returned his smile shyly, feeling her anxiety slowly shift to curiosity. "Good morning, Mr. Thompson," she replied softly.
Daisy found her seat and looked around at the other children, some chatting excitedly, others looking just as nervous as she felt. Emma, a cheerful girl with a bright pink backpack, turned to Daisy with a grin. "Hi, I'm Emma! Do you want to be my friend?"
The warmth in Emma’s voice was like a beacon, guiding Daisy through her fear. "Yes, I'd like that," Daisy replied, her smile growing broader.
Daisy and Emma ran to the swings together, their giggles mingling with the rustle of leaves. "I was scared too, but it's not so bad, right?" Emma said, kicking her legs to gain momentum.
"Yeah, it's actually kind of fun," Daisy admitted, feeling a newfound sense of courage.
"I hope everyone had a wonderful first day. Remember, every day is a new adventure here," Mr. Thompson said, closing the book with a satisfied nod.
As her mother picked her up, Daisy waved goodbye to her new friends. "I can't wait to come back tomorrow," she said, her earlier fears now just a distant memory.
