Alice sat cross-legged on her floral bedspread, pouting as she scowled at her tangled shoelaces. The soft hum of birdsong drifted in from outside, but she ignored it, too frustrated by her failed attempt at tying a perfect bow. The room felt stuffy with impatience, shadows pooling in the corners.
Alice stomped across the yard, her arms folded tightly. She watched as a classmate dropped her lunch, scattering sandwiches and apples across the sand. The other children giggled and pointed, but she turned away, pretending not to notice the girl’s teary face.
Alice lingered nearby, drawn by the gentle sweep of the broom. The janitor, stooped and smiling, offered a kind nod. "Sometimes, a little help can make someone’s day brighter, even if it seems small," he remarked, his eyes twinkling as he watched the playground.
Alice sat quietly, her chin resting on her palm as she replayed the janitor’s words. The sweetness of the cookies seemed dull, her mind busy with memories of the classmate’s tears. She wondered how it might feel to offer kindness instead of silence.
Alice spotted the same classmate struggling with a heavy stack of books. Hesitating only a moment, she stepped forward and reached out. "Can I help you carry those?" The surprise and gratitude in the girl’s eyes warmed Alice more than the sun ever could.
Alice and her new friend soared higher and higher, their feet kicking at clouds. The memory of kindness lingered sweetly, and she realized that small acts could change everything. As petals drifted past, Alice smiled, her heart light with the joy of newfound friendship.
