Ralph adjusted his backpack, eyes bright with anticipation as he glanced at Riley, his twin sister, who grinned back and kicked a pebble off the trail.
"Ready to hike all the way to Z today?"
"Absolutely! Let’s start with A for ant—I see them marching right there," he replied, pointing to a busy ant trail crossing their boots.
Riley spotted a butterfly flitting past and called out, "B for butterfly! And look, C for caterpillar—he’s so fuzzy!"
Ralph bent down, eyes wide as he listed D for duck and E for earthworm, catching sight of a wriggling worm escaping the sunlight. Their voices intertwined, filling the woods with the melody of their game: F for fox, G for goose, H for hedgehog, each discovery bringing a new burst of excitement.
Riley giggled as she named I for iguana and J for jackrabbit, though she admitted, "I wish we could see a real-life unicorn for U. Wouldn’t that be magical?"
Ralph smiled, patting her shoulder. "Maybe one day. For now, K is for koala, L is for ladybug—there’s one on your shoe!"
They continued, M for mouse, N for newt, O for owl, P for porcupine, Q for quail, R for raccoon, S for snail, T for termite. Each word brought a memory or a wish, and even when they couldn’t find an animal for U, their imaginations filled the gap.
"W for wasp—look at that nest! Let's not get too close," whispered Riley, her eyes wary but curious.
Ralph nodded, gently steering her away. "V is for vulture, remember the one we saw last week? And X is for Xantus—I learned about them in school, they’re a kind of bird!"
They quickened their pace, feeling the thrill of discovery and the gentle urgency to continue their adventure safely.
Riley smiled, "Y is for yak, even if we’ve only seen pictures. Z is for zebra—remember when Mom took us to the zoo and we saw a real one for the first time?"
Ralph nodded, nostalgic. "That was the best day. We’ve almost named them all, Riley!"
The twins paused as they heard their mom call, "Kids! Dinner’s ready!" Her voice was warm and familiar, guiding them home.
Ralph and Riley exchanged grins, racing each other up the porch steps, hearts full from their adventure and their alphabet journey through the woods.
