Amir arrived in Haiti stepped of the plane and onto the bus. After a long ride he stepped off the bus, his eyes wide with wonder as he took in the vibrant scenery. His parents led him towards his grandmother’s quaint house, nestled at the edge of the village. Inside, family photos adorned the walls, and the kitchen was alive with the chatter of relatives preparing dinner.
Amir rushed to his grandmother and nestled at her feet. Grandma tell me a story Amir said eagerly. listening intently as she spoke in a hushed, melodious voice. "Long ago, in the countryside, there lived a creature called the lougawau," she began, her hands weaving through the air. "It could shift shapes and steal souls, haunting the night. Only the bravest dared to seek it out." The adults nodded gravely, but Amir felt a shiver of excitement and fear.
That night Amir tiptoed past his sleeping family, his heart pounding. He grabbed a flashlight and slipped out the back door, determined to find the lougawau. The night air was cool, and every sound seemed louder in the darkness. "If I find it, maybe I can prove I'm brave," he whispered to himself, clutching the flashlight tightly.
Amir paused, listening for any sign of the lougawau. Suddenly, he saw a flicker of movement—a shadow darting between the trees. He followed carefully, his breath shallow, until he stumbled upon a clearing. In the center stood a figure cloaked in darkness, watching him silently.
Amir hesitated, fear and curiosity wrestling inside him. The figure stepped forward, revealing itself not as a monster, but as an old woman with a kind face. "You seek the lougawau, child?" she asked, her voice soft as velvet. "Legend is not always truth. Sometimes, myths hide the wisdom of the land." Amir listened, realizing that the stories were meant to teach courage and respect for the mysteries of Haiti.
Amir recounted his journey, sharing how he had faced his fears and found something unexpected. "The lougawau was not scary. She was wise and gentle," Amir explained, his eyes shining. As the family gathered for breakfast, Amir knew he had truly begun to embrace his heritage—bravery, respect, and wonder guiding his steps.
