Declan, a nearly white golden retriever, wiggles with excitement at the sliding door, his tail wagging furiously as he watches the preparations.
His brother, now Baxter, older and a bit slower but with a wise, gentle gaze, ambles over with a fond nudge.
"Is it time yet? Are the cousins here?"
"Soon, Declan. Let’s save your energy for the party," Baxter chuckles, his graying muzzle breaking into a soft smile.
First to bound in is Moose, a massive husky with a thunderous bark, black fur streaked with white on his chest and legs.
Raven, a sleek black lab mix with bright, intelligent eyes, darts playfully around Moose’s legs.
Party hats are fastened to furry heads, and human aunts—now Aunt Lisa, Aunt Julia, Aunt Tessa—wave to Declan, their arms full of presents and treats.
"Happy birthday, Declan! Look at you, birthday boy!"
Declan leaps in, his favorite orange ball clutched in his mouth, and paddles to a float where Baxter waits.
Moose splashes with wild enthusiasm, causing a wave that nearly tips Raven, who yelps with mock indignation.
Nearby, Milo, a cousin with a wagging tail, and Hazel, a gentle golden, join in the pool party, their hats askew but their spirits high.
"This is the best birthday ever!" Declan barks, balancing expertly on his float.
Saffron[/@ch_10] and a petite tuxedo called Mittens, perch high above the commotion.]
Saffron stretches luxuriously, her golden coat and swirling black markings catching the light.
Mittens peers down, her white whiskers twitching with curiosity as she watches dogs dash across the yard.
"At least from up here, we can enjoy the party in peace," Saffron purrs.
"And keep an eye on our silly family," Mittens adds, both cats flicking their tails contentedly.
Declan sits proudly at the head of the table, tongue lolling as everyone sings "Happy Birthday," the chorus a mix of barks, meows, and laughter.
Aunt Lisa, Aunt Julia, Aunt Tessa, Grandma Rose, and cousins Milo, Hazel, Finn, Lila, Sky, Uncle Ben cheer on.
"Thank you, everyone! I wish every day could be like this," Declan beams, licking a dollop of peanut butter from his nose.
Baxter rests his head on Declan’s back, their bond clear as stars begin to dot the sky.
Moose and Raven curl up nearby, exhausted from their play.
Inside, Saffron and Mittens nap together, the soft sounds of the party drifting through the window.
"Best birthday ever, right, Baxter?"
"Absolutely, Declan. Here’s to many more animal parties," Baxter murmurs, as the backyard glows with love and laughter beneath the night sky.
