Asher clutched his oversized backpack, its straps digging into his small shoulders. "This is it," he whispered to himself, taking a deep breath to steady his nerves.
As Asher stepped inside, his heart raced with anticipation. He scanned the room, spotting an empty seat near the window. As he settled in, he noticed a girl with curly hair and a mischievous smile eyeing him curiously.
"Good morning, everyone! I'm Ms. Thompson, and I'm excited to be your teacher this year," she announced. Lila, the girl with the curly hair, waved enthusiastically. "Hi, I'm Lila!" she chirped. Asher smiled shyly, "Hi, I'm Asher."
Lila approached Asher, holding a colorful soccer ball. "Wanna play?" she asked, her eyes sparkling with excitement. Asher nodded eagerly, feeling a rush of gratitude for her friendly gesture.
"There's a whole world out here," Lila exclaimed, gesturing to the trees lining the playground's edge. Asher felt his earlier anxiety melt away, replaced by a sense of belonging.
Asher walked toward his mom, his heart light with the day's discoveries. "How was your first day?" she asked, taking his hand. Asher smiled, glancing back at Lila who waved goodbye. "It was an adventure," he replied, already looking forward to tomorrow.
