Auggie chased his tail, his little paws skittering across the wooden floor. Haley watched him with a gentle, knowing smile. The girls, Lily and Mia, giggled from the couch as their mother, Mom, pulled a tray from the oven.
"Cookies are ready, girls!"
Auggie glanced nervously at Haley, his anxiety growing with each clap of thunder. "It's okay, Auggie," she reassured, but Auggie was too restless to listen.
"I don't like this sound," he whimpered to himself.
"Auggie, no! You'll get in trouble!" Haley pleaded, but Auggie couldn't help himself. His paws tore at the fibers as the thunder roared louder.
"Stop, Auggie! You're making a mess," Haley barked, trying to calm her brother. Auggie paused, his heart racing, and looked at Haley with wide, frightened eyes.
"Come here, Auggie," Haley said gently, curling up beside him. She nuzzled him close, her warmth and steady presence offering solace. Slowly, Auggie's trembling eased.
"What happened here?" Mom asked, surveying the chaos. Auggie looked guilty, his ears drooping. Lily and Mia giggled at his puppy-dog eyes.
"I think someone was scared of the storm," Dad chuckled, kneeling to pet Auggie. They all gathered around, showering him with love and comfort.
"It's okay, Auggie. We know it was the thunder. You're a good boy," Mom assured, hugging both dogs as the family laughed and forgave the little mishap.
