Avery stared at the scattered LEGO pieces, her fingers hesitantly hovering over the assortment. Her room was filled with the warm hues of a fading sunset, but Avery felt a storm of nerves inside. The flyer for the FIRST LEGO League lay crumpled beside her, a reminder of the challenge ahead.
Ms. Johnson, the mentor, greeted each child with a warm smile. Leo, Maya, and Sam were already chatting animatedly about their robot ideas. "Welcome to the team, Avery! We're so glad you're here," Ms. Johnson said kindly.
Avery watched as Leo demonstrated a simple robot arm. "Don't worry, it takes practice," Maya reassured her, noticing her hesitation. Sam chimed in, "I used to be nervous too. Let's tackle this together!" Their encouragement sparked a small flame of confidence in Avery.
Avery found herself gravitating towards the programming tasks. "Wow, Avery, you're really good at this!" Ms. Johnson exclaimed as she successfully coded a tricky sequence. For the first time, Avery felt a swell of pride in her abilities.
Avery shared her ideas, sketching out plans with Leo. "That's brilliant, Avery! Let's try it," Maya encouraged. Sam nodded, "Yeah, your ideas make the robot even better!" Avery's voice grew stronger, her confidence blooming like the flowers outside.
Avery stood with her teammates, the nervousness replaced by excitement. "We did this together," Leo said, patting her on the back. As their robot moved flawlessly across the course, Avery realized the true victory was not just in winning, but in discovering her own strength.
