Gus shuffled behind his parents, arms crossed and gaze fixed on the ground. He wished he was back home, laughing with his school friends instead of stuck on this family trip.
Dad, noticing his son's mood, tried to lighten the moment.
"How about a walk along the beach, Gus? You might have fun!"
Gus kicks a shell, watching it tumble toward the foamy tide. His mind drifts to memories of his friends, feeling more isolated with each step. He barely notices two familiar faces watching him from nearby.
Leila, confident and cheerful, waves as she nears.
Fergus, a bit shy but friendly, follows her lead.
"Hey, aren’t you Gus from school? What are you doing here alone?"
"I’m just... walking. My parents made me come. I didn’t want to."
"Well, maybe we can make it fun. Want to join us? We’re looking for crabs in the rocks!"
Gus finds himself smiling for the first time that day, his worries melting away in the warmth of new friendship.
"I never thought this beach could be so fun," Leila grins, holding up a shell.
"Me neither," Gus admits, surprised by how quickly things have changed.
"If only every day could be like this," Fergus says, admiring their creation.
"I don’t even want to go home anymore," Gus replies, feeling the joy of discovery.
Gus looks out over the water, grateful for the unexpected adventure and the friends he’s made.
"Let’s meet here again tomorrow," Leila suggests, hope in her voice.
"Absolutely," Gus smiles, realizing that sometimes the best memories come from the most unexpected places.
