Oliver sat on his bed, adjusting his glasses as he glanced at the clock. Today was the first day of school, and as much as he tried to feel excited, a knot of anxiety twisted in his stomach. His mother, with her brown hair tied back in a loose ponytail, poked her head in. "Remember, Oliver, just be yourself," she encouraged, offering a warm smile.
Oliver clutched his backpack straps tightly, feeling out of place among the clusters of kids who seemed to fit effortlessly. His glasses felt like a beacon, drawing unwanted attention. A group of students passed by, their laughter echoing, and he couldn't help but wonder if they were laughing at him.
Oliver found a quiet spot under a large oak tree, flipping through the pages of his favorite comic book. He was absorbed in the action-packed scenes when a shadow fell over him. A girl with curly hair approached, curious about the comic. "Is that the new issue?" she asked, her eyes lighting up.
Oliver nodded, surprised at how natural it felt to talk about something he loved. The girl introduced herself as Emma and shared her own favorite stories. They laughed and chatted, the initial awkwardness fading away. "I'm glad I wore my glasses today," Oliver said with a shy smile.
Oliver walked towards the school gate with Emma by his side, feeling lighter than he had in weeks. He realized that being himself had led to a new friendship, one that wasn't based on appearances but on shared interests. "See you tomorrow?" Emma asked as they parted ways.
Oliver recounted his day with newfound enthusiasm. "Sounds like you had a good day," his mother said, her eyes twinkling with pride. "I did, and I think I'll have more," Oliver replied, I think I will like school mom!
