Ben grips his toy tightly, his knuckles pale, as he glances up at his mom.
"Mama, I don't want to go,"
Ben's Mom, a warm, gentle woman with kind eyes, kneels to his level, embracing him in a soft hug.
"You're feeling nervous, sweetie. It's normal to feel that way on your first day,"
Ben's Mom walks hand-in-hand with Ben toward the classroom. Inside, desks are clustered together and shelves overflow with books and toys. A woman with curly hair and sparkling eyes greets them.
Mrs. Smith, the Grade 0 teacher, offers a warm, reassuring smile.
"Hi Ben, welcome! Come meet your new friends,"
Ben[/@ch_1] shrinks closer to his mom, his stomach fluttering with nerves.]
Ben holds his mom’s arm tightly, glancing nervously at the other kids.
"It's okay to feel nervous. Everyone's feeling it today – it's our first day! What made you feel nervous, Ben?"
"I don't know anyone... and I don't know the rules," he whispers, eyes downcast.
Mrs. Smith bends down to Ben's level, her voice gentle.
"We can fix that! Let's introduce ourselves. What's your favorite thing to do?"
Ben considers, clutching Mr. Whiskers a bit less tightly.
"I like building things!"
Ben[/@ch_1] stands beside Mrs. Smith, who hands him a small stack of blocks. Other children begin to gather, curiosity lighting their faces.]
"We have a big block corner! Want to help me set it up?"
Ben nods, and as he starts to build, another boy with a friendly grin approaches.
Max, an energetic boy, waves.
"I'm Max. Want to build a castle?"
As they stack blocks together, laughter bubbles up, and Ben begins to relax.
Ben[/@ch_1] settles with Mr. Whiskers in his lap, listening intently as Mrs. Smith opens a brightly illustrated book.]
Mrs. Smith reads about a brave knight venturing into a new land, her voice animated and comforting.
"What do you think the knight felt?"
Ben raises his hand, a shy smile on his face.
"Nervous... but excited!"
Ben[/@ch_1] and Max race toward the slides, their earlier nerves forgotten.]
"Break time is next – want to play outside?"
"I'll show you the swings!"
Ben soars down the slide, arms raised in delight.
"Wheeee!"
"Let's do it again!"
Ben[/@ch_1] sits with Mrs. Smith, pride glowing in his eyes.]
"I did it! I was nervous, but I'm happy now,"
"You're brave, Ben. Everyone's first day is special. You're part of our class now!"
Ben's Mom[/@ch_2] greets Ben with a big hug at the gate.]
"How was your day?"
"Good! I made friends, played blocks, and slid down the slide!"
Ben grins, waving goodbye to Max.
Ben[/@ch_1] cuddles Mr. Whiskers on the couch, his mom smiling beside him.]
"I'll go back tomorrow,"
"You're growing, Ben. And you'll always have Mr. Whiskers,"
Ben beams, ready for another day of adventure.
