Ethan, the older brother with a mop of unruly brown hair, kicks a soccer ball between his feet, while Liam, younger and quick to grin, chases after him. Suddenly, a soft whimper catches their attention from behind a bush near the fence. They freeze, exchanging wide-eyed glances.
"Did you hear that? It sounded like a puppy,"
"Stay here, I'll check,"
Ethan kneels and gently parts the leaves, revealing a scruffy, trembling dog with big, hopeful eyes.
Ethan offers a piece of his sandwich, which the dog devours hungrily. Liam giggles, reaching out to scratch the dog's ears.
"He likes us! What should we call him?"
"How about Rocket? He’s fast,"
The boys laugh as Rocket bounds in circles, his tail a blur, already trusting his new friends.
Liam shushes Rocket as he lets out a soft bark. Ethan stuffs a pillow at the door to block any noise.
"Remember, not a word to Mom or Dad. He stays hidden until we figure something out,"
"I promise! But what if they find out?"
Ethan squeezes Liam’s shoulder, determined to keep their secret.
The trio darts between hedges and tiptoes past the garden, giggling as Rocket chases a moth. They invent a game of “spy mission,” crawling under the picnic table and hiding behind flowerpots whenever headlights sweep across the fence.
"We’re like secret agents! Rocket’s our undercover partner,"
"Just don’t let him bark—or the mission’s blown,"
They huddle together, hearts pounding with excitement and a hint of fear.
Ethan distracts their mother by spilling a box of cereal while Liam quickly tugs Rocket back under the table.
"Sorry, Mom! I’ll clean it up,"
Their mother arches an eyebrow but shrugs, leaving the kitchen. The boys exchange relieved looks, stifling laughter as Rocket licks their hands in gratitude.
With guilty faces, Ethan and Liam confess to hiding Rocket and share stories of their adventures. Their parents listen, first stern, then softening as Rocket nuzzles their legs.
"Please, can we keep him? He’s our friend,"
After a long pause, their mother smiles and kneels to scratch Rocket’s chin.
"Every good secret deserves a happy ending,"
The boys erupt in cheers, hugging Rocket as their new family member.
