Marcus, the eldest brother at fifteen, laces up his sneakers, his brow furrowed in thought. Jalen, twelve, is flipping through a comic book, his laughter filling the room. Tyson, the youngest at nine, bounces a basketball on the wooden floor, every bounce echoing with energy.
"Come on, y’all, Mom’s waiting! Don’t make her call us twice," Marcus calls, his voice steady and commanding.
"I’m coming, I’m coming! Tyson, you better not take the last pancake," Jalen teases, grinning at his little brother.
Tyson dribbles his ball as they approach, eager to show off his skills. As the boys start a game, a group of older kids watches from the sidelines, their eyes sharp and calculating. The mood is light, but tension lingers in the air, subtle as the breeze that rustles the leaves.
"Let’s play two-on-two. Tyson, you’re with me!" Jalen declares, bouncing with excitement.
"Alright, but no cheating this time," Marcus warns, a playful smirk on his face.
Tyson blinks back tears, his pride stung more than his knee. Jalen and Marcus rush to his side, voices overlapping in concern. The older kids snicker, their laughter sharp and mean.
"Are you okay, Tyson?"
"I’m fine! He pushed me! He did it on purpose!" Tyson insists, pointing accusingly at one of the older boys.
"Why’d you push my brother?" Marcus demands, stepping forward.
Derrick, the ringleader, shrugs nonchalantly. "He was in my way. What you gonna do about it?"
"We’re not here to fight. Tyson, tell the truth—did he really push you, or was it an accident?" Jalen asks, his voice gentle but firm.
"I... I tripped," Tyson admits softly, his shoulders slumping. Marcus lets out a slow breath, relief softening his features. The tension eases, and the older boys lose interest, drifting away.
"See? Telling the truth takes guts. I’m proud of you, Tyson,"
"And fighting doesn’t solve anything. Words do," Jalen adds, clapping Tyson on the back.
"Next time, let’s just play for fun. No need for drama," Marcus says with a smile.
"Yeah, and next time, Tyson’s on my team again," Jalen grins, nudging his younger brother.
"Deal! But I’m getting the first pancake tomorrow," Tyson laughs, his voice ringing clear as the sky above.
