Brownie wiggled his tail as he watched birds flit past the glass. He had only recently arrived in this big new house, and everything felt exciting yet a little bit scary. The soft hum of the washing machine and a distant bark from outside made him perk up his ears, but he remained rooted to his spot, unsure of what to do next.
Brownie pushed open the screen door with his nose, stepping gingerly onto the cool grass. He spotted Misty, the neighbor’s cat, stretched out and blinking in the warmth. Brownie shuffled closer, his nose twitching nervously.
"Hello! My name is Brownie. Do you want to play with me?"
Misty lifted her head, her green eyes half-closed as she regarded the eager puppy.
"Puppies are too noisy. Why don’t you chase your own tail instead?"
Brownie drooped, his ears folding back as he watched Misty leap gracefully onto the fence and disappear. He sighed, feeling lonelier than before, his paws tracing circles in the dirt.
Buddy, a golden retriever puppy with a wagging tail and bright eyes, poked his nose through a gap in the fence.
"Hi there! I’m Buddy. Do you want to play ball with me?"
Brownie perked up, hope flickering in his eyes as he nudged the red ball closer.
"Yes! I’ve never played ball with anyone before," he replied, tail thumping excitedly.
Brownie learned to wait his turn and to cheer for Buddy when he made a good catch. When Brownie accidentally bumped into Buddy, he quickly apologized.
"That’s okay! Friends make mistakes sometimes," Buddy said with a forgiving wag.
Brownie grinned, realizing that being a good friend meant listening, sharing, and forgiving.
Brownie felt a warm happiness in his chest.
"Thank you for playing with me, Buddy. I’m glad we’re friends,"
Buddy nuzzled him back, their tails wagging in perfect harmony. Together, they watched the first stars appear, knowing that tomorrow would bring many more adventures—together.
