Nestled among her siblings, a tiny red and black striped piglet with a curious nose and bright eyes wobbles on her little hooves. The world is full of new wonders—soft grass, buzzing insects, and the warm light of morning. She is brave, always the first to wander a bit farther from the group, her snout twitching as she explores.
Eager to chase a fluttering butterfly, Cali scrambles over a slippery rock. Suddenly, her hoof slips, and she tumbles into the mud with a frightened squeal. Pain shoots through her small front leg, and she struggles to stand, but her leg won’t hold her weight. She whimpers softly, her adventurous spirit dampened by fear.
The farmer's son Ben finds the little piglet, introduces himself as they soothe the trembling piglet. "Don't worry, little one, I've got you." His voice was calm and warm. " I'm going to call you Cali. You'll heal up in no time, Cali. I'll take care of you," his eyes wide with empathy.
Days pass in a gentle routine. Cali is fed warm porridge and fresh fruit, her leg carefully bandaged. The family talks to her as they work—"Look at you, getting stronger every day,"—and she begins to trust their voices and soft touches. Healing is slow, but Cali finds comfort in the warmth and quiet of her new home.
They visit the small-town post office, where the scent of paper and ink mixes with the laughter of neighbors. At the grocery store, Cali sniffs bins of apples and listens to the beep of registers. The local redemption center is noisy, with clinking bottles and chattering workers, but to Cali, every new smell and sight is an exciting discovery.
"You really are an adventurer, Cali," Ben says as he scratches behind her ears. Cali snuffles contentedly, her heart full of happiness. She knows that, as she grows, the world will only get bigger and more thrilling—she is, after all, a pig born for adventure.
As they head home to the warmth of the farm and the warm food that will be waiting for her. As well as her blanket and bed. Cali is content. Every day her legs feels better, she knows that one day she will be able to run and play with her siblings. And she will tell them about the adventures she has had with he humans. And one day, maybe even take her siblings on an adventure to explore new and exciting places.
They all arrive home, Ben takes Cali to the bedding area, lays her down gently, and leaves to make her dinner. comes back with a variety of goodies for Cali to munch on . Belly filled, and Cali lies down for a sleep. She begins to dream of the day she just had. And smiles in her sleep.
