Cam stretched his long arms and hopped out of bed, feeling that special mix of excitement and nerves in his stomach. Today was the big flag football game. He could hear birds chirping outside and the smell of pancakes wafting down the hallway. "Today’s the day! I’m ready," he whispered, grabbing his favorite red jersey from the chair.
Noah, Cam’s big brother, was already dressed in his own jersey, tossing a soft football back and forth. Dad stood by the counter, flipping pancakes, his eyes twinkling with encouragement. "You’re going to do great, Cam! Just remember to have fun and keep your eyes on the ball," Noah said with a grin. "And don’t forget, hard work and practice always pay off," added Dad, ruffling Cam’s hair.
Dad showed Cam how to grip the ball and tuck in his flags. "Let’s practice those quick turns and sharp eyes," Dad encouraged. "Like this?" Cam asked, running fast and pulling the flags from Noah’s belt. "Whoa! You’re getting fast, little bro," Noah cheered, both boys laughing as they tumbled onto the grass.
Cam looked around at his teammates, feeling butterflies in his stomach. Dad knelt beside him, looking serious but gentle. "Remember, Cam, focus on your goal, listen to your coach, and most importantly, have fun out there! Win or lose, you’ve worked hard and I’m proud of you," Dad said quietly. "I’ll do my best, Dad," Cam replied, taking a deep breath.
Cam ran fast, dodging and weaving, remembering what Noah and Dad had taught him. He caught a pass, his fingers gripping the ball tight as he sprinted toward the end zone. "I can do this! Focus, Cam, focus!" he told himself, his heart pounding. With a final burst of speed, he crossed the line—his teammates cheered and gave high fives.
"You were awesome out there, Cam! You gave it your all," Noah said, slinging an arm over his brother’s shoulder. "You worked hard, stayed focused, and had fun—that’s what really matters," Dad said. "I want to play again next week! If I keep practicing, maybe one day I’ll be the quarterback, just like you want to be, Noah," Cam beamed. The family hugged, the field glowing in the evening light, proud of Cam’s effort, teamwork, and the joy of the game.
