Max stands in the center of the room, beaming with excitement. He's dressed in his clown costume: a patchwork jacket, oversized shoes, his favorite tie—a bright yellow adorned with purple polka dots—and a big red rubber nose that squeaks every time he touches it. The air smells faintly of popcorn and face paint, hinting at many playful afternoons spent here.
"Loonette! Will you dress up with me today? I want to see your TV costume—the one with the purple hat. And don’t forget your pigtails and Molly!"
Loonette, Max's older sister and the famous clown from the Big Comfy Couch, kneels beside the chest. Her black hair is already parted, ready to be pulled into pigtails. She pulls out her cherished purple hat, the fabric still soft, and laughs as she finds Molly, her favorite rag doll, peeking out from beneath a tutu.
"You always know how to make me smile, Max. Let’s see if I still remember how to do my clown cheeks just right," she says, beginning to gather her costume pieces.
Max carefully applies rosy circles to Loonette's cheeks while she ties her hair into perfect pigtails, laughing together all the while. Loonette helps Max adjust his tie, ensuring the purple polka dots stand out just so.
"There! Now you look like the happiest clown in the world," she says, giving his red nose a friendly squeak.
With Molly tucked under her arm, Loonette twirls, her purple hat wobbling. Max does a silly dance, his shoes flopping, and the tie bouncing with every step. Laughter fills the space as they perform skits, juggle soft balls, and pretend to tumble, just like on TV.
"Presenting the amazing Loonette and her magical doll Molly!" Max announces in his best ringmaster voice.
Loonette sets Molly between them, the doll’s stitched smile matching their own. The sun sets outside, bathing the room in a warm golden glow. The world feels just a little more magical when they share these moments.
"You know, Max, no matter how big I get, I’ll always love clowning around with you," she says softly.
Max hugs Loonette, his red nose pressing into her shoulder. Molly sits between them, a silent witness to their sibling bond. The day may be ending, but the joy they've created together will last far beyond the fading light.
"Let’s do this again tomorrow," he whispers, and Loonette nods, already dreaming of their next great clown adventure.
