Tom the turkey greeted the morning with enthusiasm, his eyes shining with the excitement of a new adventure. "Gobble, gobble! Good morning, friends! I’m Tom the turkey, and I live in the Great Smoky Mountains. There’s so much to see in my home! Let’s take a hike together, and I’ll help you learn how to count. Are you ready? Let’s go!"
"Look over there! Do you see that big oak tree? Someone is hiding behind it! It’s ONE big bear! Can you hold up one finger?" Tom said, pointing his wing towards the majestic tree where a bear peeked out shyly.
"Vroom! Two squirrels just dashed across the trail, chasing each other into the grass. One, two! Can you count them with me?" Tom chuckled, watching the lively creatures disappear into the underbrush.
"As a park ranger, my job is to help keep the forest safe. Look! There are THREE big branches blocking the path. Let’s move them out of the way. Count with me—one, two, three! Great job!" Tom announced, puffing up with pride at the little helpers.
"When traveling through Cades Cove, you can spot deer. Look! A family of FOUR deer is wandering in the fields. One, two, three, four! What do you think they’re looking for?" Tom asked, tilting his head thoughtfully as the deer nibbled peacefully on the grass.
"Even the little insects are part of my home. Look closely—do you see them? FIVE ants are climbing up the hill! Let’s count—one, two, three, four, five!" Tom exclaimed, marveling at the tiny workers.
"Just like me, there are lots of turkeys here. Before the holiday season, SIX turkeys gather together. One, two, three, four, five, six! That’s a whole flock! Gobble, gobble!" Tom clucked happily, joining the chorus of gobbles.
"Look at all these stones! I see SEVEN rocks stacked near the water. Let’s count them—one, two, three, four, five, six, seven! Can you find a rock near you?" Tom encouraged, the gentle babbling of the river soothing in the background.
"The Smoky Mountains are home to EIGHT popular species of trees! Pine, oak, maple, hickory, beech, birch, cedar, and sycamore! Can you spot them? In the fall, the leaves change colors and fall gently to the ground." Tom explained, awed by the natural beauty.
"Wow! Look at those NINE leaves spiraling down! One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine! Fall is so beautiful!" Tom exclaimed, twirling as the leaves settled around him.
"Look at these acorns! TEN acorns are waiting to be gathered by the squirrels. Let’s count them together—one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten!" Tom said, smiling as the squirrels began their collection.
"Did you learn your numbers? Let’s review!" Tom encouraged, as images of each counted item appeared around them: the bear, squirrels, branches, deer, ants, turkeys, rocks, trees, leaves, and acorns. "Great job! I hope you had fun counting with me. Until next time, see you on our next adventure!" Tom waved, ready for the next journey through his beloved mountains.
