Cuca sits on her bed, fingers nervously twisting a pink hair tie as she shapes her brown, semi-curled hair into two neat ponytails. Her heart thumps with worry—today is her first day at a new school, and making friends has never come easily. She glances at her reflection, hoping the pink cardigan and sparkly shoes will help her stand out in a good way. The scent of pancakes drifts in from the kitchen, but excitement and nerves keep her rooted in place.
Cuca steps onto the blacktop, her backpack swinging. She watches other kids greet each other with hugs and high-fives, feeling the familiar ache of not knowing where to go. As she walks past a group of giggling girls, she lowers her gaze, clutching her backpack straps tighter. The world feels noisy and crowded, but also achingly lonely.
Ms. Rivera, the cheerful teacher with silver glasses, greets everyone with a smile. "Good morning, class! We have someone new with us today. Would you like to introduce yourself?" Cuca stands, cheeks flushed. "Um, hi. I’m Cuca. I like pink and drawing cartoons." The class listens curiously, some kids nodding or grinning at her shy wave.
Cuca searches for a seat, nerves fluttering in her stomach. She spots an empty spot next to Lila, a girl with purple glasses and a stack of comic books. Taking a deep breath, she sits down quietly. "I like your ponytails," Lila says warmly. "Thanks. I love your comics. Did you draw these?" Their conversation blooms, slow but genuine, as they exchange stories about their favorite superheroes.
Cuca and Lila join a group playing hopscotch, the chalk colors matching Cuca’s pink sneakers. As they jump and giggle, Cuca realizes she’s not alone anymore. Mateo, a boy with a soccer ball, invites them to join his game. For the first time, Cuca laughs with a crowd, surprised at how easy it feels.
Cuca walks home with a skip in her step, pink backpack bouncing behind her. She smiles, remembering Lila’s new friendship and the games she played. "Maybe making friends isn’t as scary as I thought," she whispers, the warmth of the day settling in her heart. The world seems a little brighter, and she can’t wait for tomorrow.
