Dolly, a small brown puppy with floppy ears and shiny eyes, wiggles out of her yard. She is curious and wants to explore. Her tail wags as she looks around, wondering what adventures she might find.
"I wonder what is out there!"
Dolly stops and looks up at the sign. She remembers that a stop sign means "Wait and look before crossing."
"Red means stop and be careful," she thinks, watching a car stop and then go.
Dolly starts to feel worried. She wonders which way to go back. She remembers the bus and thinks, "School buses take children to learn and play."
Dolly pauses to sniff the mailbox. She recalls what mailboxes are for.
"Mailboxes hold letters for people," she says softly, hoping someone will send her mom a letter to find her.
Dolly sits outside the bakery, sniffing and listening to the baker hum a happy tune.
"Bakeries make bread and treats for everyone," she remembers, wishing she could stay longer.
Dolly remembers the blue slide from her walk earlier. She thinks, "I must be close to home now!"
"Slides are fun to play on, but I need to find my way back," she tells herself.
Dolly runs happily into her mom's arms. She feels safe and warm again, glad to be home.
"I found my way back!" Dolly says, her tail wagging. Her mom hugs her tight, and together they watch the stars twinkle above.
