Eli sat on his soft bed, swinging his tail as he scribbled a list onto a scrap of paper. “Vegetables, nuts, grain—oh, and fruit. That would be the best,” he muttered, determination shining in his eyes. He tucked the list under his arm, grabbed his miniature shovel and basket, and bounded out the door, his heart set on Grandma Bell’s garden.
Eli wiggled his toes in the dewy grass, relishing the cool softness against his feet. He gazed at the bounty before him—lettuce, carrots, green beans, peas, broccoli, cabbage, and even fruit and nut trees. With his shovel in hand, he scampered to a carrot patch, ready for the day’s work.
"If I eat this, will I turn orange too?" he giggled, imagining his face as bright as the carrot he’d just unearthed.
Grandma Bell’s presence filled the air with warmth and safety. She paused her song, waving kindly. Eli hesitated only a moment before returning her greeting, feeling reassured by her gentle smile.

Each time he returned, his mouth stuffed with greens, his cheeks bulged like a tiny chimpanzee. He zipped down the path, barely avoiding muddy patches, eager to finish his chores before dusk.
"There is so much more to do and see. How many places could a little mouse be?" he whispered, eyes sparkling with excitement.

Eli froze, tiny paws raised in alarm, but the garden’s scarecrow loomed up, scaring the crow away with its raggedy grin. As raindrops began to patter, Grandma Bell appeared with a red polka-dot umbrella.
"Here, little one, this will keep you dry," she sang, handing the umbrella to Eli, who gratefully accepted the shelter.
Eli laughed, his worries forgotten as the bunny bounded away. He turned to Grandma Bell, uncertain.
"Will a rabbit eat me?"
"No, Eli. You’re as safe as can be here," she assured him, her voice gentle as a lullaby.
Grandma Bell gestured to the basket, her eyes twinkling. "Fill it with whatever you love most. Spring is when we celebrate the day Jesus brought us new life," she explained. Eli carefully collected nuts and fruit, his heart full of gratitude.

He paused to look back at Grandma Bell, who stood by her garden sign, waving. "Eli, let’s thank God for this beautiful garden and all its gifts," she called. Umbrella in paw, Eli joined her, folding his hands as they prayed together, grateful for sunshine, rain, and the kindness that made every adventure safe and sweet.
