Ella, a bright-eyed Black girl with her hair in neat braids, clings to her mother’s hand as they step inside. The air smells faintly of crayons and playdough, and laughter bubbles from a group of children nearby. Ella looks around, her heart fluttering with excitement and a hint of nervousness.
Sue, the nursery teacher, wears a bright sunflower pin on her cardigan and has gentle eyes. "Hello, Ella! I’m so glad you’re here today. Do you want to come meet some new friends and see our playground?" Ella nods shyly, releasing her mother’s hand and stepping closer to Sue.
Sue introduces Ella to two children building a sandcastle. Maya, a girl with curly hair and a sparkly headband, grins and hands Ella a bright green bucket. "Want to help us build a kangaroo in the sand?" Ella beams, kneeling beside them, her nerves melting away.
Ella scoops sand into a kangaroo-shaped mold, pressing it in with determined fingers. Leo, a boy with a gentle voice, adds little pebbles for eyes. "It looks just like a real kangaroo!" "Let’s make a whole family of them!" The children laugh, their voices blending with the sounds of play.
Sue calls everyone to the table. Ella sits between Maya and Leo, her cheeks flushed with happiness. "Here you go, Ella—some water, apple slices, and cheese. You did wonderfully this morning," Sue says, placing the snack in front of her. "Thank you! I love apples and cheese," Ella replies, her eyes shining.
Ella hugs Maya and Leo goodbye, her heart full and content. "I can’t wait to come back tomorrow," she whispers to Sue, who smiles and waves. Outside, Ella takes her mother’s hand, already dreaming of the fun adventures to come at her new nursery.
