Emberly, a spirited four-year-old with curly auburn hair and bright blue eyes, stood by the crib, her small hands gripping the wooden edge. She gazed at her newborn sister Ellie, who was peacefully sleeping, wrapped in a soft pink blanket. "Why does Ellie sleep so much, Mommy?" Mom, kneeling beside her, smiled gently and brushed a strand of hair from Emberly's face. "Ellie is still learning about the world, just like you did. She needs a lot of rest to grow big and strong."
Emberly sat on the plush carpet, surrounded by her favorite dolls and building blocks. Mom was seated nearby, cradling Ellie in her arms. "Mommy, can we play now?" Mom looked up with an apologetic smile. "In just a little bit, sweetheart. I need to feed Ellie first." Emberly's face fell, and she poked at her blocks, feeling a pang of jealousy.
Emberly watched as Dad pushed her on the swing. "Look, Emberly! Ellie is watching you swing," he pointed out. Emberly glanced over to see Ellie giggling in Mom's arms, her tiny eyes tracking the swing's motion. At that moment, Emberly felt a warm sense of pride and responsibility.
Emberly sat beside Mom on the couch, Ellie nestled comfortably between them. "Can I help feed Ellie tomorrow?" she asked, her voice filled with newfound eagerness. Mom beamed, wrapping an arm around Emberly. "Of course, sweetheart. You’re her big sister, and she’ll need you to help her learn and grow."
Emberly stood by the crib once more, watching Ellie sleep. She leaned over, kissing her sister's forehead gently. "Goodnight, Ellie. I’ll be here when you wake up," she whispered, feeling a sense of peace and belonging. As she climbed into her own bed, Emberly knew that while she might have to share her parents' attention, she had gained a new companion in the process.
