Eli lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, feeling a knot of anxiety twist in his stomach. Today was the first day of school, and he couldn't shake the fear of the unknown. "What if no one likes me?" he whispered to the empty room. Mom appeared at the door, a reassuring smile on her face. "You'll be great, Eli. Just be yourself," she encouraged.
Eli dragged his feet to the breakfast table, where Mom had set a plate of his favorite breakfast. Dad was already seated, sipping coffee and reading the newspaper. "Ready for the big day, champ?" he asked, peering over the paper with a grin. Eli shrugged, nibbling on the toast. "Remember, everyone feels a little nervous. Just take deep breaths and you'll do fine," Dad added, giving Eli a gentle pat on the back.
Eli clutched his backpack straps tightly as Mom parked the car. "You've got this," she assured, giving him a quick hug. With a deep breath, Eli stepped out, joining the stream of students heading inside. The noise seemed overwhelming, but he focused on the comforting weight of his favorite book in his bag, a reminder of the stories that always calmed him.
Eli found his seat, heart pounding. Ms. Thompson, the teacher, stood at the front, welcoming each student with a cheerful wave. "Good morning, everyone! Let's start with a fun introduction game," she announced. As names and stories were shared, Eli felt his anxiety slowly melting away. When his turn came, he took a deep breath and shared a little about his love for reading.
Eli realized that he wasn't alone in his worries; many of his classmates were just as nervous. As the day progressed, he made new friends and found comfort in the familiar routine of classes and recess. "Today wasn't as scary as I thought," Eli mused during lunch, sitting with a group of new friends.
Eli met Mom outside, a smile spreading across his face. "How was it?" she asked, noticing the change in his demeanor. "It was actually fun. I think I'm going to like it here," he replied, feeling a newfound confidence. As they walked to the car, Eli looked back at the school, knowing that tomorrow would be even better.
