Milo, the boldest of the trio, peeks out from under the crate, twitching his whiskers as he surveys the empty street. Willow, the smallest, shivers and presses closer to Pip, whose striped tail wraps protectively around her. The distant rumble of a garbage truck startles them, but hunger keeps them rooted to their spot.
"Do you think anyone will find us here?"
"Someone always walks by in the morning," Milo reassures, though his voice wavers with uncertainty.
The kittens watch anxiously as people pass, but most don't notice their tiny faces peering from the shadows. Pip's stomach growls, and Milo noses an empty tin can hopefully. The world feels big and indifferent, and yet, hope flickers in their bright eyes.
"Maybe if we meow loud enough, someone will stop," Pip suggests, trying to sound braver than he feels.
She pauses, noticing a flash of movement beneath the crate. Kneeling, she sets her bags down and gently calls out, her eyes warm with concern. The kittens shrink back at first, but the kindness in her voice softens their fear.
Emma, the kind stranger, extends a hand, palm open and still.
"Hello, little ones. Are you lost and hungry?"
Milo inches forward, drawn by the scent, and soon Pip and Willow follow, trembling but hopeful. Emma offers gentle words, brushing stray leaves from their fur and checking them over with care.
"She smells nice. And the food is so good," Milo murmurs between bites.
"You’re safe now, I promise," Emma whispers, stroking their heads.
The kittens, now clean and warm, explore their surroundings in awe. Willow bats at a feathery toy, Pip curls up in a sunbeam, and Milo watches birds flit outside the window. Emma sits cross-legged nearby, a gentle smile on her face.
"This place feels like magic," Willow purrs softly.

The rhythm of her voice lulls them into contentment, and the once-worried kittens drift into peaceful sleep. Outside, the city’s noise fades, replaced by the gentle promise of love and belonging.
"You’re home now. Forever," Emma says, her heart full.
