Oliver stood by the edge of the playground, his small frame almost hidden by the oversized backpack he wore. His glasses slipped down his nose as he watched groups of kids playing tag and soccer. "Maybe today will be different," he whispered to himself, clutching the straps of his backpack a little tighter.
Emma, a bright-eyed girl with a contagious smile, noticed Oliver watching them. "Hey, do you want to join us?" she called out, causing him to blink in surprise. Hesitantly, Oliver nodded and stepped forward, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness.
Oliver sat at a table by himself, his lunchbox unopened. Max, a boy with tousled hair and a mischievous grin, approached him. "Do you care if I sit here?" he asked. Oliver shook his head, feeling a warmth spread through his chest as Max plopped down across from him.
Liam, a boy with an infectious laugh, joined Oliver, Emma, and Max as they sat on the grass. "Why do you always wear those glasses?" he asked, genuinely curious. Oliver adjusted them, smiling softly. "They help me see the world better," he replied, feeling more comfortable in his own skin.
As Oliver walked home, flanked by his new friends, he felt a sense of belonging that he hadn't before. Emma nudged him playfully, while Max shared a joke that had them all laughing. His mom's words echoed in his mind, reminding him to stay true to himself.
Oliver opened the door, greeted by the comforting aroma of dinner cooking. His mom looked up from the kitchen, her eyes warm and knowing. "I made some new friends today," he announced, his voice brimming with happiness. Her smile widened, and Oliver knew he had found his place by being exactly who he was meant to be. knew just being would pay off just like his mom said. He’ll never forget those words “just be you”!
