Tommy, a small boy with glasses and a head full of unruly curls, stands alone by the fence, clutching his backpack tightly. He watches the other children with a mix of longing and apprehension. "M-maybe today will be d-d-different," he whispers to himself, though the uncertainty in his voice betrays him.
The teacher, Mrs. Johnson, stands at the front, her gentle smile encouraging. "Good morning, everyone! Today is a special day. We have our speech competition coming up, and I know you’ve all been working hard," she announces. Tommy's heart sinks at the mention, his palms growing sweaty as he glances at the paper in front of him, words blurring together like a tangled web.
Suzi, a cheerful girl with a braid of golden hair, sits across from Tommy at the lunch table. "I've heard you practicing. You’re really good, Tommy," she says with an encouraging smile. Tommy looks up, surprised by her kindness. "Th-th-thank you, Suzi. I’m just s-s-scared," he admits, his eyes meeting hers. "You can do it. Just take your time. I’ll be cheering for you," she assures him, her confidence infectious.
Tommy stands at the back of the room, practicing his speech in a whisper. With each word, he feels a little more courage seep into his bones. Mrs. Johnson approaches, her presence a calming anchor. "Remember, Tommy, it’s okay to be nervous. Just speak from your heart," she advises, placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
Tommy waits in the wings, the sound of his heartbeat almost drowning out the applause. When his name is called, he steps forward, the light blinding at first. He takes a deep breath, Suzi’s smile flashing in his mind. "H-h-hello, everyone," he begins, his voice trembling but growing stronger with each word. The room listens intently, and as he speaks, Tommy feels the weight of his fears lifting, carried away by the strength of his newfound voice.
Tommy walks home beside Suzi, their chatter mingling with the sounds of nature around them. "You were amazing, Tommy. I knew you could do it," Suzi says, her eyes sparkling with pride. Tommy smiles, a sense of accomplishment warming his heart. "Th-thank you, Suzi. I c-couldn’t have done it without you," he replies, his words flowing more freely now. Together, they walk into the sunset, their friendship a beacon of hope in the journey ahead.
