Jamir Williams, a tall Black boy with a fresh haircut and hopeful eyes, clutches his schedule tightly as he steps onto the campus. His palms are damp, his backpack heavier than it should be, filled with notebooks and the weight of first-day expectations. He pauses, scanning the shifting crowd, searching for a familiar face and finding none.
Jamir hesitates near his locker, glancing at the numbers before twisting the dial. He fumbles with the combination, feeling eyes on him, though no one stops. A group of boys nearby joke loudly, their laughter echoing, and Jamir's shoulders tense as he wonders if he’ll fit in.
Ava Chen, a girl with a paint-splattered backpack and a quick smile, notices Jamir scanning the tables and waves him over. "Hey, you look new! Want to sit with us?" she calls out, her voice warm amid the din. Jamir hesitates, then nods, grateful, as he threads his way to her table.
Luis Martinez, a boy with curly hair and a soccer ball at his feet, grins at Jamir. "First day, huh? Don’t worry, it gets easier after lunch," he jokes, drawing a nervous laugh from Jamir. "We were just talking about joining clubs. Are you into anything? Art, sports, music?" Jamir considers, then says he likes basketball and writing, and the group lights up, offering stories of their own interests and inviting him to a pickup game after school.

"You know, I was nervous my first day too," Ava admits, doodling in the margin of her notebook. "Same here. But it turns out, everyone’s a little scared at first," Luis adds, smiling. Jamir realizes, for the first time that day, that he’s not alone in his worries.
Jamir tosses his backpack over one shoulder, waving goodbye to his new friends. He breathes in the evening air, lighter now, as if the day has lifted a weight from his chest. Tomorrow, he knows, will bring its own challenges—but now, he has people to face them with.
