Lila sits on the edge of her bed, her feet swinging as she stares at her reflection in the mirror. Her big brown eyes are wide with excitement and a hint of worry, her hair tied in two neat braids. She clutches a shiny red apple in one hand, her other hand fidgeting with the corner of her new backpack.
"I wonder if I'll make any friends today," she whispers to herself, the words floating softly in the quiet morning.
Lila[/@ch_1] steps outside, her mother’s hand warm and reassuring in hers. Birds chirp from the branches overhead, and the yellow school bus waits at the curb with its engine humming.]
Mom, gentle and encouraging, kneels to straighten Lila's collar and brushes a stray hair from her forehead.
"Remember, everyone is a little nervous on their first day. Just be yourself," she says with a loving smile.
"Will you wait for me at the bus stop after school?"
"Of course, sweetheart. I’ll be right here," promises Mom, squeezing her daughter's hand.
Lila hesitates at the bottom step of the bus, her heart pounding. She watches other kids greet each other with hugs and high-fives, a swirl of backpacks and lunchboxes in motion. Clutching her apple, she takes a deep breath and steps forward.
Ms. Rivera, the teacher, stands at the front with a warm smile, her eyes sparkling behind her glasses.
"Good morning, everyone! Find your name on a desk and take a seat," she calls out cheerfully.
Lila finds her desk near the window and sits down, glancing shyly at the girl next to her with curly hair and bright pink sneakers.
Ms. Rivera[/@ch_3] asks the children to introduce themselves. Light pours in, making the dust motes dance, and the room feels alive with possibility.]
Emma, the girl beside Lila, turns with a grin.
"Hi, I’m Emma. I like dinosaurs. Do you want to play at recess?"
"I’d love to! I brought a dinosaur sticker in my backpack," replies Lila, her nerves beginning to melt away in the warmth of new friendship.
Lila[/@ch_1] races out to see Mom waiting by the bus stop, arms open wide.]
Lila runs into her mother’s embrace, her cheeks flushed with happiness.
"Mom, I made a friend! And tomorrow I’m bringing two dinosaur stickers," she exclaims, her earlier worries forgotten.
"I knew you would, my brave girl," says Mom, holding her close as the sky turns a gentle pink, promising more adventures to come.
