Maya, a little girl with curly hair and big brown eyes, sits on the edge of her bed swinging her feet. Her hands twist together as she looks at her backpack. "What if I don't make any friends at school?" she whispers into the quiet room.
Dad, cheerful and reassuring, places a plate of pancakes in front of Maya. "Everyone feels a little nervous on their first day, Maya. Just be yourself and you'll find friends who love your stories," he says with a wink. Maya manages a small smile and hugs her dad.
Maya stands near the entrance, clutching her backpack straps. A group of kids forms a circle nearby, but she hesitates to join. Her heart beats quickly as she watches them play a clapping game.
Ms. Green, the teacher, introduces Maya to the class. "Would anyone like to share a story while we get to know each other?" she asks. After a moment, Maya raises her hand shyly.
Maya begins to tell a story about a dragon who learned to be brave. The other children listen closely, their eyes wide and smiles growing. Liam, a boy with glasses, leans forward. "Can I draw your dragon?" he asks excitedly, and soon other children want to join in too.
Maya feels her worries melt away as she laughs with Liam and the others. "I was nervous at first, but making friends is a wonderful adventure," she says, her eyes sparkling with happiness. The day ends with a feeling of warmth and belonging, and Maya can't wait for tomorrow.
