Isabella sat on the edge of her bed, her tiny hands clutching the straps of her brand-new backpack. Her eyes flickered from her shoes—lined up perfectly beneath her feet—to the shining lunchbox on her dresser, emblazoned with cartoon stars and smiling animals. The promise of a new adventure made her tummy flutter, but so did the worry of the unknown. Mom, cheerful and reassuring, entered the room. "Are you ready for your big day,, Isabella ? I made your favorite sandwich for lunch,""What if I forget where my classroom is? Or if nobody wants to play with me?""You'll be just fine. Remember, every friend you have now was once a stranger," Mom smiled, brushing a stray curl from Isabella 's forehead.
Every step felt heavier than the last, the soft crunch of gravel beneath Isabella ’s sneakers echoing her heartbeat. The scent of fresh-cut grass mingled with the nervous excitement in the air. As they approached the large, brick building, the sight of the bustling playground set Isabella ’s heart pounding even faster. "There are so many kids, Mom,""That means so many chances to make new friends," Mom squeezed her hand, guiding her toward the front gate where a smiling teacher waved to new arrivals.
Ms. Carter, the kindergarten teacher with kind eyes and a flowered dress, knelt to greet Isabella at the door. "Welcome, Isabella! I’m so glad you’re here. Would you like to put your backpack in your cubby and join us on the rug?"Isabella nodded, her nerves easing a little as she noticed other children sitting in a circle, some chatting and others clutching their own special toys.
Oliver, a boy with a bright red shirt and an easy smile, sat beside Isabella and offered her a blue crayon. "Do you want to draw with me? I’m making a rocket ship,""Sure! Can I help make the stars?" The two bent over the paper, giggling as they filled the sky with yellow bursts and colorful planets, the beginning of a new friendship blooming with each shared color.
When Ms. Carter invites volunteers to share something about themselves, Isabella feels her hands turn clammy. She hesitates, glancing at Oliver, who gives her an encouraging nod. "I... I like drawing and stars," Isabella says quietly, her voice trembling but brave. "That's wonderful, Isabella ! Maybe you can show us your rocket ship drawing later," Ms. Carter beams, making Isabella smile with relief.
"How was your first day, Isabella ?""I was scared at first, but I made a friend and I even talked in front of the class,""I'm so proud of you. Tomorrow will be even better," As they walk, Isabella glances up at the sky, her worries replaced by excitement for the adventures still to come.
