Flex stood at the entrance, his small hands clutching the straps of his backpack. His eyes darted from the towering slide to the spinning merry-go-round, taking in the unfamiliar sights.
Flex hesitated, feeling the soft earth beneath his shoes. He watched in awe as a boy raced past, wind ruffling his hair. Nearby, a girl in a pink dress, Maya, was busy constructing an elaborate sandcastle.
"Hey, do you want to help me with the moat?" Maya called out, her hands brushing sand away from her masterpiece.
Flex took a deep breath, feeling the pull of his comfort zone. The swings seemed inviting, but something in Maya's smile made him consider stepping out.
"I've never made a moat before," Flex admitted, his fingers clumsily moving through the sand.
"Thanks for helping," Maya said, offering Flex a high-five.
Flex grinned, feeling a warmth that had nothing to do with the sun. This place, once daunting, now felt like a world of possibilities.
