Franklin the turtle ambles purposefully across the dewy grass, clutching a cold bottle of Code Red Mountain Dew in his flipper. His shell, freshly polished, glints in the sunlight as he gazes at the iconic red-brick school building, already buzzing with the energy of students. The air is filled with laughter, the clatter of lunchboxes, and the scent of freshly mown grass.
"Today’s the day I finally beat Super Mario Bros 2 during recess," he murmurs with determination, adjusting the Super Mario Bros 2 sticker on his backpack. His eyes dart toward the old oak at the edge of the playground, where rumors say the bravest students meet to swap game secrets.
A tall, lanky figure in purple stands at the center—Waluigi, the self-proclaimed king of playground gaming, twirling his mustache as he sips from a can of grape soda. The crowd quiets as Franklin approaches, his Code Red bottle fizzing with excitement.
"So, Franklin, you think you can take on the Forest North high score? Only the boldest dare face my record," Waluigi taunts, flashing a sly grin.
Franklin sits down, unscrewing the cap from his Code Red and taking a long, bracing sip. The taste zings through him, a burst of confidence. Waluigi hands over the Game Boy with a flourish, and the other students lean in, their faces alight with anticipation.
"If I win, you show me the secret warp zone," Franklin proposes, clutching the console with steady hands.
"And if you lose, you hand over that legendary Mario sticker," Waluigi counters, raising an eyebrow.
Franklin's thumbs move with surprising agility, fueled by the sugar rush and his love for adventure. The world narrows to the screen, the music, and the challenge ahead. Waluigi, arms crossed, watches every move with a calculating eye.
"Come on, just one more heart! I can do this," Franklin whispers, sweat beading on his brow.
Franklin lifts the Game Boy high, grinning ear to ear, while Waluigi slumps in dramatic defeat, his grape soda momentarily forgotten. The sticker remains safe, and Waluigi reluctantly hands over a tattered notebook filled with secret level codes.
"Rules are rules, Franklin. Enjoy the warp zone, champ," Waluigi concedes, a sly twinkle still in his eye.
Franklin and Waluigi, now allies in gaming, laugh together as the bell rings. The adventure of Forest North Elementary and Super Mario Bros 2 will live on, told and retold beneath the old oak tree.
"Next time, I’ll bring my Donkey Kong high score," Franklin says with a wink, shouldering his backpack.
"You’re on, Franklin. You’re on," Waluigi replies, as they head back inside—ready for the next great playground challenge.
