Henry, the mischievous beagle, eyed the toast on the edge of the table with unbridled longing. Crumbs dotted the floor, and the smell of strawberry jam hung sweetly in the air. Abigail, a bright-eyed little girl with curly hair and rosy cheeks, clapped her hands, sending more crumbs tumbling earthward. Henry gave her a hopeful look, his big brown eyes wide and pleading.
"Henwy, good boy! You want toast?"
Henry barked softly in agreement, his tail thumping against the floor. Abigail reached down with a chubby hand, offering him a piece, while her mother smiled from the kitchen sink.
Henry nudged the door open a little wider with his nose. Abigail, clutching her favorite plush bunny, toddled after him, her excitement barely contained. Together, they slipped outside, giggling and barking, embarking on another secret adventure.
"Let’s run, Henwy!"
Henry bounded ahead, ears flopping, as Abigail toddled across the grass, following her furry friend.
Henry sniffed the ground, then began to dig furiously, sending clumps of dirt flying. Abigail plopped down beside him, patting the dirt with her tiny hands. Suddenly, something shiny caught her eye in the soil.
"Look, Henwy! Shiny!"
Henry barked in approval, his tail wagging as Abigail unearthed a small, silver button—lost from one of her old jackets.
Abigail smeared mud on her cheeks, giggling uncontrollably. Henry rolled onto his back, paws waving in the air, wiggling in the soft earth. Their joy was infectious, a whirlwind of energy and muddy fun.
"We so dirty, Henwy!"
"Woof woof!"
Abigail’s mother appeared, hands on her hips but a smile on her face. She shook her head at the sight of the mud-caked pair. Henry wagged his tail sheepishly, while Abigail grinned up at her mom.
"Bath time, Henwy! You first!"
Warm water and suds soon washed away the morning’s mischief, leaving both friends clean but a little disappointed that their fun was over.
Abigail yawned, her eyelids drooping as she leaned against Henry. Henry rested his head on her lap, content and tired from their adventure. Outside, birds chirped softly, and all was peaceful as the best friends drifted into a gentle nap, dreaming of their next backyard escapade.
