Jack ambled down the path, a backpack slung across his shoulder and a whistle on his lips. The world seemed utterly peaceful, save for the distant rumble of a tractor. He paused, stretching, and smiled at the promise of another simple day.
Jack froze, his ears catching the unmistakable whimper of distress. He stepped closer, pushing aside tangled vines. Peering into the darkness, he saw a pair of frightened eyes reflecting the sunlight from deep within the well. "Hello? Are you okay down there?"
The puppy whimpered again, pawing at the wall. Jack knelt at the edge, heart pounding with worry. "Hold on, little one. I’m going to get you out of there. Stay with me, okay?" The puppy, sensing kindness, barked weakly in reply.
Jack lowered himself slowly, feet searching for purchase on the slick stones. His hands trembled, but his resolve held strong. "Almost there, Bandit. I’m coming for you," he murmured, naming the puppy in a burst of inspiration. Bandit’s eyes widened with hope.
Jack gently set Bandit down, checking him for injuries. "You’re safe now, Bandit. Let’s get you cleaned up and find you something to eat," he said, ruffling the puppy’s ears. Bandit wagged his tail for the first time, licking Jack’s hand in thanks.
Bandit sniffed every corner, his nose twitching at the smells of breakfast wafting from the kitchen. Jack watched with a proud smile, feeling a new bond blossoming between them. "Welcome home, Bandit," he whispered, knowing their adventures were only just beginning.
