Jason blinked up at the ceiling, the world spinning a little as he tried to sit up. Everything seemed bigger—the crib rails towered above, and the air felt thick with the hush of dawn. He reached for his face, but only chubby toddler hands met his gaze in the reflection of a mirror across the room. He felt a strange mix of confusion and wonder, his memories a swirl of the boy he once was and the little girl he now appeared to be.
Mummy swept Jason into a warm embrace, holding him close as if nothing in the world mattered more. Jess, her five-year-old daughter, giggled as she watched, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Good morning, my little darling," Mummy cooed, brushing a stray lock of hair from Jason's forehead. "Can I play with her now, Mummy? Please?"
Jess carefully selected her old doll’s primary school uniform dress, the navy blue fabric neatly pressed and adorned with tiny buttons. With a proud smile, she dressed Jason in it, smoothing out the pleats and tying the ribbons with practiced care. "You look just like my favorite dolly," she declared, stepping back to admire her handiwork. Jason squirmed a little, uncertain, but the warmth of Jess's attention made him feel strangely cherished.
Jess sat Jason beside her favorite dolls, arranging them in a perfect row. She poured imaginary tea into tiny cups and orchestrated a parade of giggles, directing Jason to wave and nod at just the right moments. "Now, everyone say thank you to our new friend!" Jason hesitated, then joined in the play, his laughter mingling with hers in the cozy glow of the room.
Jess carefully tucked Jason into a cozy corner of her cupboard, wrapping a soft blanket around him just like she did with her dolls. "You have to stay here until I want to play again, okay?" she whispered, a touch of seriousness in her tiny voice. Jason nodded, feeling a strange comfort in the ritual, the love in his new family’s world wrapping around him like the softest embrace. Jess shut the cupboard and left Jason to sleep
Lying among the dolls, Jason let his thoughts drift between memory and now. He realized that, though life was different, love surrounded him in the smallest gestures—a sister’s laughter, a mother’s touch, the comfort of soft blankets. As sleep claimed him, Jason smiled, embracing his new world with a heart full of hope. He drifted off to sleep in the cupboard were he would be returned to after his sister was finished playing with him
