Jimmy trudged along the sidewalk, kicking a pebble with his worn-out sneaker. His thoughts were on the new school year and the friends he had yet to make. "Why is it so hard to fit in?" he muttered to himself, watching the pebble roll away.
Jimmy stopped in his tracks, intrigued by the little dog. "Hey there, fella," he called out gently, crouching down to the dog's level. The dog trotted over, its tail wagging furiously, and nuzzled against Jimmy's hand.
Jimmy felt an unexpected sense of companionship with the little dog. "I think I'll call you Lucky," he decided, scratching behind the dog's ears. Lucky responded with a happy yip, as if approving of the name.
Jimmy threw the ball, watching in delight as Lucky darted after it. "You're fast, Lucky!" he cheered. Lucky returned with the ball, his eyes sparkling with excitement.
Jimmy looked down at Lucky, his heart swelling with gratitude. "I guess we're friends now, huh?" he said softly. Lucky barked in agreement, his tail wagging in the fading light.
Jimmy felt a warmth spread through him, a sense of belonging he hadn't felt in a long time. With Lucky by his side, the world seemed a little less daunting. "I think we're going to have a lot of adventures together," he whispered, smiling at his new friend.
