Jonah the badger walked in circles, his face pinched in pain as he tried to ignore the throbbing in his tooth. Every so often, he would wince and look longingly at a jar of sweet honey on the table, sighing because even a taste would make his tooth ache worse. The comforting burrow felt less like home and more like a prison, trapping him with his worries.
Tadia, Jonah’s cousin, bounded in with a wide grin. Her shiny new braces sparkled as she spoke, excitement brightening her eyes. "Tadia, did you go to the dentist? Wasn’t it scary?" "Yes, and it was great! He’s going to help me get the most beautiful smile. You should go too, Jonah! The dentist can take away your pain." Tadia’s confidence made the burrow feel a little less gloomy, but Jonah still hesitated, chewing on her words.
Jonah sat quietly, gazing at the flickering fire and thinking about Tadia’s advice. He remembered how she used to be nervous about the dentist too, but now she looked happier than ever. After a long silence, "Tadia, would you come with me if I went to see the dentist? I’m really scared, but I don’t want to hurt anymore." "Of course, Jonah! I’ll be right by your side the whole time." The warmth from the fire—and from Tadia’s promise—gave Jonah a small spark of courage.
Jonah sat with Tadia, paws sweaty, heart pounding. He eyed the big wooden door with dread, imagining all sorts of strange tools behind it. Tadia tried to distract him by pointing out the funny paintings on the wall and sharing stories about her visit. "See that picture of the squirrel? He was even more scared than you, but now he’s got the brightest teeth in the forest!" Jonah managed a shaky smile, grateful for his cousin’s support.
Doctor Michael, the kindly mole dentist, welcomed Jonah with a warm smile and gentle voice. "Hello, Jonah! I hear you’ve been feeling some pain. Let’s have a look and see how we can help you feel better." Jonah climbed into the big chair, surprised by how comfortable it was. Doctor Michael chatted calmly, explaining each step and showing Jonah the gentle tools he would use. In no time at all, the pain was gone, replaced by a sense of relief and wonder.
Jonah turned to Tadia, a bright smile spreading across his face for the first time in days. "You know, Tadia! I should have come to the dentist a long time ago. I feel so much better!" "I’m proud of you, Jonah. Now you can enjoy honey again—pain free!" The cousins laughed together, their fears behind them and their smiles shining bright as they strolled home through the meadow.
